Hookah at Shi Chai

On Center Street in Riverwest, lies a small Middle Eastern Restaurant and Hookah Bar. Recorded outside on a slightly rainy day, this sound has an odd texture to it. The sound is made up of bubbles trapped in a water chamber that move up the stem of the pipe. In the recording you can also hear, for a few seconds, the coal igniting the tobacco in the top of the pipe, as well as the restaurant patron blowing smoke out of the pipe to clear the chamber of air.

Sewer Drain Pipe On A Rainy Day

After a long rainy day this sewer drain was beginning to back up and the side of the curb was full of water. This was due to a car that was parked on top of the drain, as well as leaves being stuck under the tire. This forced the water to all go into the drain in a space about 6 inches wide. This sound is especially unique, since the car on the drain was parked illegally.

Construction at New Riverview Dorms

Construction for the new dorms that will be opening in January. The site is almost completly full of construction equipment, and I tried to get as close as possible without having to wear a hard hat to attain this sound. The sound consists of a crane pulling up pieces of road, dirt, and sidewalk, turning around, and dumping the mixture into a large dumptruck. Since I could not be right next to the shovel as it worked, this recording also has some traffic, as well as some insects as I walk away from the site, across the bridge.

Experiments with a Sign

After aimlessly bumping into a sign inside of a parking garage. I began to play with the vibrations that it made when struck by my fingers, slapped, and how different locations of my microphone affected the sound. Later on in the recording, I strike the sign, then move my microphone as it vibrates, which creates a pulsating drone.

Birds on Murray

Although we all hear birds, I found this interesting because at first, I could only hear the birds through my headphones, so it was hard for me to pinpoint their location. Once found, I just took an sound snapshot of the birds mixed with traffic.
